The golden percentage rule: the optimal charging range

For everyday use, most modern electric cars follow the so-called 20-80 rule: lithium-ion batteries are happiest in the middle charging range. Charging all the way to 100% or running down close to 0% puts the cells under high chemical stress and speeds up ageing.

  • Everyday use: limit the maximum charge to 80% in your vehicle settings. That is easily enough for daily trips in Switzerland.

  • Exception before long journeys: before a big trip you can charge the battery to 100%. Just make sure the car doesn't sit fully charged for days, but is driven soon after.

  • Avoid deep discharge: don't leave the vehicle parked for long periods with a charge level below 10-20%.

The charging recommendation depends heavily on the battery type. Brands like BYD (with its Blade battery) and Tesla increasingly use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in their standard models. These are more robust when it comes to full charges. For LFP batteries, Tesla even explicitly recommends charging the car to 100% about once a week so the battery management system (BMS) stays properly calibrated; BYD models with the Blade battery also handle regular full charging without any problem. Charging speed: fast charging (DC) vs. alternating current (AC)

Recent analyses of large vehicle fleets are clear: frequent ultra-fast charging (DC) at motorway chargers above 100 kW stresses the battery far more, due to the high heat build-up, than slower alternating current (AC) charging. No. As long as the charge level stays in the optimal range between 20 and 80%, topping up daily does not harm the battery. Short, regular charging cycles are often even easier on lithium-ion cells than large swings from completely empty to completely full.

Both extreme heat and frost put strain on the battery. In winter, use the vehicle's preconditioning via the app while the car is still plugged in. This brings the battery to its ideal operating temperature before driving and charging.
